In Why Did I Get Married? Tyler Perry, the once homeless African-American playwright and now a mega rich movie producer, brings to the big screen another glimpse into Black America. This story carries a different flavor in that it allows us to see how the other half of lives...The affluent black america, if you will. There is Ms. Janet Jackson as the ever efficient/ intellectual writer/mentor and relationship expert who counsels keeping it real in relationships in order to keep a marriage alive...
This advice is basically the theme as couples with great jobs and friendships meet to mingle, greet and discuss at yearly couples retreat. Tyler Perry plays the wise beyond reason husband of Janet. The other players are just as good in their roles ... the hairdresser who nags at her husband for drama caused by his babies mama. There is the strong willed attorney who places everyone else needs above her man's.
But, first and most endearing of them all...Sista Jill. Jill Scott is the underdog. The woman who is determined to love her man back into her arms, even when he demeans her, verbally abuses her; brags to his boys how he is "hittin' that" as in his sleeping with his wife slut of a friend! Through it all, Ms. Jill remains steadfast for her man.
Jill Scott, the poet, songstress and all around spiritual diva, in my humble opinion, will be winning much favor for this one. She speaks in the movie for all women who have for whatever reason been beaten down by the men they loved, only to 'rise up and walk' again from the ashes in the aftermath of change.
Ms. Scott admits in numerous interviews that the acting for her was not so easily stopped when the director called, 'cut'. Having been recently divorced from her husband of six years, Ms. Scott was still feeling the emotional tides of change, coupled with disappointment and heartbreak that many women of divorce feels...The movie which coincides with the release of her new album can only mean that Sista girl is once again headed in the right direction.
To all women of divorce/dissolution/heartache/low self-esteem... Why Did I Get Married? becomes an age old lesson that speaks on how one man's 'precieved garbage' will undoubtedly become another man's 'valued treasure.'..peace
